/out/ings with a pipe Archived /out/
Last thread >>2797205

>how to get started
Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool. Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you.

>smoking a pipe will give you cancer
Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. Tobacco is just another good thing under attack by the government.

All tobacco users welcome. Stoners will be taken to Singapore and caned.

White Mountains - Presidential Traverse Archived /out/
Sometime this week I’m hoping to hike the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire, weather permitting. I’m just looking for some sort of reality check on the book times, which are 12-14 hrs for ~20 miles and ~9000ft. I am fit, and have plenty of experience hiking/backpacking. I’ve done the Pemigewasset loop in the Whites, and moved quickly over that ridgeline. I’ve done 20 miles with a heavy pack and plenty of daylight to spare - albeit over maybe easier terrain than the whites. I understand the potential risks posed by the extreme weather, although this week looks good other than cloud cover.

Just looking for someone to tell me if I’m grossly underestimating this.

How the fuck do you plan a hike? Archived /out/
I want to go on a 4-5 day tent hike anywhere in the Alps.
I’d like a place that’s not overcrowded and doesn’t require walking under cable cars or crossing busy streets.
A day dedicated to a peak with some scrambling or easy climbing would be cool too.

I'm not necessarily looking for concrete routes, but more so advice on how to plan a trip like this. I can't find anything that fits my requirements.
I live in Switzerland, but ironically it seems like a terrible place for a multi day hike like this.

Helicopter Deployed After Shouts on Mountain Turn Out to Be Dropped Camera Archived /out/
A dramatic rescue operation was launched in Oberperfuss on Sunday evening after hikers reported hearing screams and a loud bang in the mountains. Police feared an accident, but the cause turned out to be far less serious: a German hiker had dropped his expensive DSLR camera and shouted in frustration.

At around 7:10 p.m., police were alerted that several people near the Roßkogel had heard loud cries that sounded like a call for help. A police helicopter was dispatched for an initial search but found nothing. Witnesses near the Krimpenbachalm told officers they had clearly heard both the screams and a dull thud.

Later, a moving light was spotted on the mountainside, apparently from someone descending. By 9:00 p.m., officers made contact with a 58-year-old German hiker. He explained that while photographing the sunset, he had dropped his high-end camera, which was badly damaged. As he tried to recover it, he shouted loudly in frustration. He noticed the helicopter circling but did not realize it was searching for him.

The man was uninjured and was able to hike down on his own to his car, parked at the Inzinger Alm.

The operation involved the police helicopter Libelle Tirol as well as patrols from the Fulpmes and Kematen stations, including alpine officers. According to police, the damaged camera was valued in the low five-figure range.

You'd think training our cattle to attack and kill them would've been enough deterrence.

Currently making a leather sling bag for my offgrid travels around the world, and my idea for it is so unique to what I discovered I used and needed when travelling that I'm pretty sure this bag would suck for anyone else using it.

Pic unrelated.
Are you using anything you made yourself for your /out/side adventures or did you trash everything away to buy premade gear?

It seems like a higher risk, lower reward game. I know that more elevation doesn't always equal more fun but I don't think the likehood of avalanches equals fun either. I don't think any kind of fun is worth almost 30% kill rate. And if you just wanna kill yourself in mountains, you can try rock climbing with no rope or simply hiking in winter in swimsuit.

For transforming nature Archived /out/
The edge of morality
A case of transforming nature

A common slogan regarding evolution is “evolution doesn’t stop at the neck.” The basic idea is that the same evolutionary forces that work on our bodies—determining our height, method of reproduction, and so on—also work on our brains. Our minds are not unfiltered Cartesian egos, unaffected by evolution, and the assumption that they are is a source of serious error.

But there’s a similar dogma when it comes to ethics that is as widespread as it is indefensible. This is roughly the notion that ethics stops at the edge of society—that ethics, in other words, has nothing to say about nature, and there are no values to be promoted in nature; all we should do, with respect to nature, is preserve it. This idea strikes me as clearly wrong!

When you tell people that you support modifying nature to reduce suffering—trying to get rid of predators that rip their victims limb from limb and of flies that lay eggs in the bodies of live animals, eating their way out from the inside—they act like you have grown another head. But I think the worthwhileness of modifying nature follows from every plausible ethical view.

We normally accept that it’s bad when animals suffer. We think there’s something noble about helping out an injured deer, but nothing comparably noble about helping out an injured plant. When, in the 1980s, surgery was performed on live dogs without any anesthetic, we correctly recognize that such a practice was ghastly and horrific. The reason it was horrific is that it’s bad to be in excruciating agony. The fact that huge numbers of dogs were in excruciating agony was a bad thing. Surely it can’t be that it’s only bad for dogs to suffer if humans are the culprit—this would imply that it’s wrong to treat horrible diseases dogs have, if treating the diseases causes them any suffering.

I got stung by a bee yesterday while watering flowers at work. I felt really tired on the way home, which I heard was normal, then proceeded to eat dinner (I was sneezing by this point), go to sleep earlier than usual, and then woke up an hour later from my "nap". I sat up and felt super congested, sneezy etc, with what could best be described as an "allergy cough" you'd get from something like hay fever. But I never once felt like I couldn't breathe (save for the congestion) and had no feeling of shortness of breath when not breathing out of my nose. I took some ibuprofen and the sneeziness went away soon after.
>tl;dr Should I still see an allergist? I work outdoors and while I've been stung before I don't wanna randomly drop dead from something as preventable as a bee sting.

Look folks, it's 2025, fire is out the window. Your risk of starting a forest fire is too high, and smoke gives away your position to anybody. Obviously, fire is fucking dumb. The comanche would cold camp without fire to evade the Texas Rangers.

But luckily, there are some really cool alternatives to using fire for cooking.

>cold soak
Dehydrated refried beans and othee foods can simply be left in water
>solar grill
These are really fucking cool and work great for cooking
>non-cook solutions
Muh protein powder, fiber powder and multivitamin gauntlent

Im quite fond of the cold soak, I rarely even use heat to cook at home. The solar shit is really cool.
