After beating Bloodlines 2, I wanted to take a break, but I was craving more WoD games like I crave dopamine so I went and put Bloodlines 1 back on and, uh...the game, as a GAME... does not hold up very well.
Granted, a part of it was cause I forgot to set my steam to play the version with the Unofficial patch (and I will be playing again with it on this time) but uh, wow is the game just... not very functional.
While the Unofficial patch will certainly address some of the more egregious issues, I was just kind of gob smacked by how technically fucked baseline Bloodlines 1 was. And to check if I wasn't crazy, I went and tried Kotor 1 again since its a similar kind of RPG from about the same time period and Kotor, while definitely showing its age and not immune to problems, had nowhere near this level of jank. And there is shit here that I do not think the Unofficial Patch can fix.
Bloodlines 2, on the other hand, ran very smoothly for me. I encountered a grand total of one bug in the whole game and all it did was put a quest marker in a weird location until I finished that quest. Bloodlines 2 has some design issues and a few big missing quality of life features, but it is very much well put together as a game. Yes, that should be the standard by 2025 but it really isn't. But going from 2 back to 1 made me appreciate it more, and also understand why they may have thought removing, overhauling, and changing a lot of these systems was a good idea. I still love Bloodlines 1 but I get it.
I do think they threw the baby out with the bath water but that tub needed some dumping.
