You need a way into the union, and must be young when you start. It takes years to go from apprentice to journeyman to master. I know a guy who's a millionaire from being a steamfitter in NYC, he just turned 40 and retired. Because of the union. Same thing with garbage truck drivers, unless you have family in the union already you ain't getting the job. My best friend had to delay moving into the home he paid millions to build, because the fire sprinkler guy said "the union is on strike and in California all new homes need sprinklers for fire suppression". The only viable route I'd see is getting a basic job, learning all you need to, then start you own business with your savings. Landscaping, roofing, solar installs, etc. Masonry and woodwork is too low paid, don't bother.
