Zoomer Experiment /vr/
So among my generation, I've noticed there is a severe lack of understanding of the differences between 8-bit and 16-bit. Most zoomers really cannot tell accurately what it is and its even worse when they try to describe something like Atari's 8-bit graphics.

Anyways I have started doing this experiment and would be funny if you share results of trying it too.
Take two 16-bit games, I do one for Genesis and one for SNES. Then ask them which do they think is 8-bit and which 16-bit and almost everyone (except one guy who already plays games of all eras) said the Genesis ones are 8-bit and the SNES ones are 16-bit.

Just played through this for the first time. Skipped over it for years because I assumed it would be dog shit but I haven’t had this much fun with a sonic game since Sonic Rush for the DS. This game is extremely based. Not too hard to where you want to kill yourself, but not easy enough to be considered a kids game, 3D renders turned into great looking sprites, and a killer soundtrack.

Why does no one regard this as highly as other Sonic games? Is it because of the isometric perspective? Sure it’s a little clunky but once you get used to the games physics it’s a pretty good game.

I love Nintendo and SEGA to death but I can honestly understand why PlayStation thrashed them in the 5th & 6th generation.

Final Fantasy VII /vr/
Man... I'm that anon who's playing the series in release order, just finished this and as much as I don't want to sound like a corny normalfag this is the best one so far and it's not even close. I expected a storydriven '''moviegame''' because people here have convinced me that the gameplay takes a backseat but the materia system is just so much fun. And I mean I don't need to tell you about everything else like the story, characters, music enemy designs, prerendered backgrounds, etc, literally everything is 10/10. There is one and only one thing that I'm not a big fan of: most dungeons are way too short but that's about it. Will be taking a break from the series now. And it looks like 8 is when this Final Fantasy thing starts when some fans love the game and it's their favorite but the others think it's 2/10 dogshit, I've realised that it's like that with every game in the series from 8 onwards
TL;DR This game isn't overrated actually

Shmups /vr/
You should play shmups.
Don't worry about finding one that's "easy" or "for beginners"; they're all hard, just pick what you think is the coolest or best one. The only difference is time, and the really good ones have enough depth to not get tiresome. You just have to change your mindset, credit-feeding is acceptable for practice but it's not beating the game. Chase the 1cc. Easily the most gratifying experience in gaming.

Also "memoslop" isn't real, it's a meme non-players made up to describe routing

Why did the Apple IIgs have such a small number of great games? /vr/
IIgs was my first computer, I loved that thing. I got it when it was brand new. Mom even sprang for the 8MB RAM card but I couldn't talk her into the SCSI HDD + adapter card (which together cost as much as the computer + RAM) but I did manage to get her to buy a 5 1/4" drive to go with the 3 1/2" unit "so I could use my school disks."

I pirated extensively, my middle school science teacher who was in the Army before that, he was a big software pirate as was my English teacher who had a kid in my class. I still have a huge number of mostly working disks, including some which I drilled a hole into to "make" them DSHD or to convert freebie disks which had the write protect hole covered permanently. And it's mostly SHIT. I played Tower of Myraglen a few times, it's not randomized so it eventually becomes a bit old. Dragon Wars was a lot deeper and the IIgs version is GREAT compared to the rest. Full Metal Planete is great. There are only about two dozen games which are best on the IIgs though. Even though it was very powerful hardware for the day with perhaps the best sound chip put into an '80s computer, again which was sorely under-utilized. Same chip was the heart of many successful synthesizers going even into the 1990s.

What could have saved the IIgs? Free full 16-bit dev kit with each computer? Pushing CD-ROM more and earlier (IIgs had full CD-ROM support)? IIgs could, in every technical way, have run Myst all the way back in 1986. In many ways, excepting the 16-bit nature, it was superior to early Macs. It also has the finest most conformant IEEE floating point library implementation of all time, done by Kahan himself, a point which goes often unnoticed. It was never used by any serious programs however. He invented IEEE floating point as well as writing the code in the HP 12C calculator which to this day is considered the benchmark for accuracy so much that MS Excel copies its behavior.

Any Breath of Fire fans out there?
I ignored this franchise as a kid, but just played through the first 4 games over the past year
It was interesting to see how the games evolved from 1994 to 2000; a snapshot of what RPGs were like at that point in gaming history
It was always great to see Deis appear in some form or another
I enjoyed BOF4 the most, by far
I know that BOF5 was made by a completely different team, but played the first few minutes of BOF5 and actually thought it seemed interesting, so I might continue playing it
Any thoughts to share on the franchise? Memes? Waifu debates?

This has to be said. Yeah, DA looks cooler, has extra content, has better new characters. But it's not a real MK game. It doesn't play like MK. It doesn't continue the arcade legacy. It's stiff and awkward. Fighting style change gimmick is worse than MK4 weapons gimmick.

MK4 is a true MK game and a continuation of arcade MK games. It's fluid and fun. The arcade version doesn't even look that bad, Legacy Collection finally does it justice.

Why didn't more GG ports use this approach? It may require some tweaks for fonts and other "delicate" visuals but it's still 100% better than the cropped-screen alternative that made games like Sonic 2 barely playable.

Titanic Mystery: Ao no Senritsu (NES) english translation /vr/
>Titanic Mystery: Ao no Senritsu" is an action-adventure game on the Famicom Disk System. In this game, you're a CEO of a company in charge of raising the RMS Titanic from its resting place. Select one of three divers (whichever you choose has no effect on the game) and dive into the Titanic wreckage to pull out artifacts which you can sell to investors while, at the same time, find a way to raise the doomed ship from its oceanic grave.

I played through Diver's Dream on the PSX last year, this reminds me a lot of that

>The translation patch comes with a fan-translated instruction manual, which also contains a small manga backstory. (Warning, the manga has a brief nude shower scene.)

The Japanese video game preservation society is out of money. The project, in which a white person in Japan buys rare Japanese video games and magazines with donation money and keeps them in a warehouse which only he and his friends are allowed access to, will close by September if they aren't given more money. Since they have a policy of not making ROM dumps of any games or scanning any magazines it's anyone's guess what will happen to the collected material.

You gotta admit that the jump to the 6th generation (mistakenly referred to as the "128-bit era" in its early days) resulted in a considerable loss of Soul™.

Every day, I have to see half of my watched threads die overnight because they refuse to update the autoban filter. It's negligence and at this point the staff are collaborating towards the death of the board. I hate you so much, so much more than the shitposter, because you have the power to make it stop but you refuse to.

This board is either full of grown men in their 30s and 40s fighting about long-dead console wars, or zoomers fighting wars for consoles they never even owned, and I don't know which would be worse
