MGS2 and V are the best, most defining MGS games

1 wasn't as gameplay oriented, 10/10 Visual Novel but it borders on a flash game in terms of gameplay complexity, borderline minigame setpieces

2 is the game that defined Metal Gear in technology, gameplay, and cinematics. It is objectively the defining Metal Gear game that the entire series revolves around.

3 is a specific reaction to 2. Kojima didn't even want to make it.

4 is a reaction to leaving Snake unresolved in 2

V is the most the series has ever attempted to mechanically and thematically evolve itself since 2 AND distance itself from 2 without being dragged down by it like the other games. It further enhanced cinematics to a point that lengthy dialogue is no longer necessary when the visuals themselves tell the story
