I think this is a bi specific thing. You hang out with other straight guys and talk about hot women and date girls so you're heavily socialized in the straight, and probably heavily discouraged away from gay. So your brain just doesn't register gay things as gay or if it does you have a crisis because you think there's just gay and straight, and there's no way you're gay. You even call yourself semi-gay.
I think the large majority of closet cases you see are like this. I'm glad I realized it early on in high school and I remember then having a few oh shit moments where I realized how long I actually had gay thoughts. One of those times was like this talking to a friend, same friend that always bantered with me about hot girls in class
