/cg/ - Climbing General
~~Hangboarding Edition~~

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.

>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.

>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

Here are some useful resources for sizing:

>Do I need Magdust/Rugne Gear?
No, most chalk you find will be good. Mammut is older, cheaper, and as reliable as they come.

>Do I need to start hangboarding?
Hangboarding is a tool used to improve climbing, but you likely won't *need* it until you've climbed for 2-3 years. Even that's generous. Just climb.

>FAQ on buying a bike that nobody reads anyway:
> What good bike can I get for under $500?
a stolen bike. Possibly a newer used entry level hardtail but don't expect it to survive rock gardens, jumps, or drops. Or an older mtb which won't be as good as newer ones and will still have a front derailleur, but it'll be good enough.
> What good bike can I get for under $1000
Good used hardtail, new entry level hardtail
> What good bike can I get for under $2000?
New Hardtail, decent used full suspension
> What good bike can I get for under $3000?
https://www.yt-industries.com/fr/produits/velos/capra/uncaged-10-al/602/capra-mx-uncaged-10/
Used full suspension, decent entry level full suspension but prepared to put more money into it.
> What are the excellent value brands?
Marin, Commencal, Canyon, Polygon, YT, Propain, Kona, and many more. Sometimes the expensive brands have an excellent alue bike
> What are the differences between an XC, Trail, Enduro, and Downhill bikes?
XC bikes are for going up fast, go down not as fast. Trail bikes are for going up and down. Enduro bikes are for going down fast, and slower up. Downhill bikes are for going down really fast, needs a ski lift, truck, or the rider pushing it to go up.

/jsa/ Japanese sword arts general the importance of defeat edition
A thread to discuss Japanese weapon based martial arts and our own martial journey with like minded people, discussion of other Asian systems is welcomed too.

>what is kendo?
Kendo is a modern Japanese budō that uses shinai (bamboo sword) and armor for combat, in its modern purpose is a way to strengthen body and spirit and develop character.

>is kendo a martial art?
Kinda

>what do I need to start kendo?
A shirt and sweat pants your club will likely borrow you the rest when you start

>what is iaido?
Is a Japanese martial art, influenced by zen practices based on different kata (drills) and subdivided in different schools with solo drills based on drawing the sword from the scabbard to defend from an imaginary opponent.

>what is kenjutsu?
Is a old form of Japanese budō based on the use of various weapons as they were used back in the day by the samurai, depending on ryūha you can have various way of teaching, weapons, presence or lack of sparring and time/place of origin.

>what do I need to start kenjutsu/iaido?
Sweat pants and a shirt again, depending on club ryūha you may be required to buy additional equipment but at the very start you don’t need anything.

/xs/ Football Club
What’s up /xs/bros. I’m Mortis, the new /xs/ divegrass manager.

Our extreme virtual divegrass team will be competing in the upcoming 4cc Autumn Babby Cup. Use this thread to comment your suggestions for players, aesthetics, tactics, any thoughts on the overall team, or be the first /xs/ anon to call the new manager a fag.

Our board is home to a wide variety of extreme sports, so I would love to see a little more representation of sports that haven’t gotten a chance to shine. I’m also looking into getting our team our very first stadium, something that can hopefully be finalized in the future.

This will be my first cup as manager so please support our team this next cup. Let’s show all the other boards that it’s not about the size of our board that matters, it’s about how long it takes to learn a new skate trick without giving up, how many times we get thrown on the mat by our opponent and we still get up, how we go for that steep hill on our bike without bailing. Whatever extreme sport you practice, it’s about the extreme passion you have.

And remember, you don’t have to be a musician to be an Earth Rocker.

A skatepark in Iceland, maybe a McDojo
Been thinking about having a /sumo/ inspired kit, I don't think you can have the players wearing a mawashi as a kit so the second best thing would be a kit inspired on the yukata they wear regularly
We are a few day away from the autumn baby cup,

In a group with /toy/, /y/ and /vr/

First match vs /toy/ this saturday 25 should be around 1h30-2pm easter depending on the rigging.

Then, we face the ga/y/s on halloween at the end of the day.

Finally, on sunday, we meet /vr/.

See you soon.

Hey /xs/, absolute tourist here, do you guys ever discuss skiing or have a skiing general? I see another thread on cross country, but I'm thinking more alpine or freestyle.

Bit early in October, but I'm looking forward to this season, hoping I'm well enough to go.

Alternative boxing training
i've been doing boxing for some years but recently got a shoulder injury that will take many months to recover. Unfortunately i cannot do sparring and other heavy training and can only do light exercises and practice combinations that are not too taxing on the shoulders. What types of training can i do to keep up in the meantime so i do not lose progress or at least have something where i can improve?. I was thinking on focusing on footwork, coordination drills and light shadowboxing for technique but i can't seem to incorporate them well enough.

SHOTAKON karate vs ASHIHABARA karate
I used to do boxing in high school (3 years). I'm now 36. Thinking of starting karate. Which type is good?
Should I do shotakon karate? Or I have an ashihabara karate school right next to my house, it seems the best for me.

(I already did TKD (Taekwondo not Total Kike Death) and Muay Thai and I didn't like it much but ashihabara karate seems cool and more useful from videos)

Before I start, I wanted to get a bit more /fit/, so I lost a lot of weight, got down to 77 kg from 88, I'm 187 cm. Still no visible abs but I think I should be good to go

optimal fight wear
lets say your walking down the street and u bump into a guy. one things leads into another your granted a fair 1v1 no weapons only limbs. (kicks and whatnot allowed) but you cant back out. what kind of clothing would be best? would you regular street wear help you? i usally wear a nike tech fleece very breathable and moveable material and typical sneakers. only thing that might through me off is if im wearing some jeans that day. i think perfect fighting outfit would be a good sports tracksuit like the nike tech suit and some sort of sneaker that u can grip the floor in and kick with but thats not too limiting. on the foot

>Physically conditioned, fit participants
>Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully
