/cg/ - Climbing General
~~Magnus Midtbø is a Sellout Edition~~

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.

>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.

>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

Here are some useful resources for sizing:

>Do I need Magdust/Rugne Gear?
No, most chalk you find will be good. Mammut is older, cheaper, and as reliable as they come.

>Do I need to start hangboarding?
Hangboarding is a tool used to improve climbing, but you likely won't *need* it until you've climbed for 2-3 years. Even that's generous. Just climb.

What do you guys have to say about the SPES' Hussar set? (Jacket and Pants). The jacket is nearly 4.5 kg at XL, and the pants are 2.25 kg at XL. Does a scrawny tall guy (really not all that strong, has maybe some arm strength but definitely no leg/torso strength) stand a chance in these?

It's overbuilt. Approximately nobody uses the Hussar gear. In fact, fewer and fewer people use the regular AP jacket; most people use an AP Light, with the Officer as the second most common choice.

Marathon but you can sabotage your opponents any way you want. Weapons allowed. Basically the Road Rash game but on foot.

Dodgeball with bocce.

Polo but with rodeo horses.

Water polo but the water is slightly acidic so your skin and eyes start to burn after a while and you can only get out (rotating with other team members) once you score.

Any motor sport but without brakes.

Soccer with bowling balls.

Squash but the room is so narrow and you can get hit by the other player's racket.

Basketball but the court is oiled.

judo or wrestling
I'm a lightweight, (1.78m, 60kg), i've been going to judo for some months now, I'm liking it a lot, but, is it comparable/better to wrestling? Especially for a guy my size, I always thought wrestling would be useless as from what I know, it uses a lot of raw strength, while judo (though it still uses strength) is better suited for taking down heavier/stronger people. Is this right? Should I try doing some wrestling? I find judo very good but also sometimes limited by the sport

Ultimate Self-Defense Championship Season 2
First episode is out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCsR-zxwN1Y
>What is the Ultimate Self-Defense Championship?
A bit over a year ago, former Aikidoka YouTuber Rokas Leo set up a tournament with a self-defense "academy" to have himself and five other martial arts YouTubers compete to see who is best at self-defense. It was a hilarious shitshow that nearly crippled one of the contestants, Ramsey Dewey who would later get into an internet spat with the guy behind the academy (Jeff Phillips) and described the entire event as "piss poor" due to poor management, an incoherent and arbitrary scoring system, running on a very limited schedule, and timing events terribly (like having a zombie apocalypse-themed event that didn't influence score in the middle of the entire thing instead of at the end or something) and doing comically dangerous shit like making people fight on a narrow bridge a good 30ft above the ground.
Somehow, he kickstarted a second one, which features even less martial arts YouTubers.

SHOTAKON karate vs ASHIHABARA karate
I used to do boxing in high school (3 years). I'm now 36. Thinking of starting karate. Which type is good?
Should I do shotakon karate? Or I have an ashihabara karate school right next to my house, it seems the best for me.

(I already did TKD (Taekwondo not Total Kike Death) and Muay Thai and I didn't like it much but ashihabara karate seems cool and more useful from videos)

Before I start, I wanted to get a bit more /fit/, so I lost a lot of weight, got down to 77 kg from 88, I'm 187 cm. Still no visible abs but I think I should be good to go

The twink did it again edition

>FAQ on buying a bike that nobody reads anyway:
> What good bike can I get for under $500?
a stolen bike. Possibly a newer used entry level hardtail but don't expect it to survive rock gardens, jumps, or drops. Or an older mtb which won't be as good as newer ones and will still have a front derailleur, but it'll be good enough.
> What good bike can I get for under $1000
Good used hardtail, new entry level hardtail
> What good bike can I get for under $2000?
New Hardtail, decent used full suspension
> What good bike can I get for under $3000?
https://www.yt-industries.com/fr/produits/velos/capra/uncaged-10-al/602/capra-mx-uncaged-10/
Used full suspension, decent entry level full suspension but prepared to put more money into it.
> What are the excellent value brands?
Marin, Commencal, Canyon, Polygon, YT, Propain, Kona, and many more. Sometimes the expensive brands have an excellent alue bike
> What are the differences between an XC, Trail, Enduro, and Downhill bikes?
XC bikes are for going up fast, go down not as fast. Trail bikes are for going up and down. Enduro bikes are for going down fast, and slower up. Downhill bikes are for going down really fast, needs a ski lift, truck, or the rider pushing it to go up.

All "martial artists" are pathetic, weak-minded people; they have to wear rainbow ribbons to motivate themselves in cosplay.

A true martial artist primarily cultivates and masters his mind, and in his martial life, he will only wear a rope around his waist and eventually a black belt after long years of mental, physical, and martial training.

turkish and kushti grappling styles
Why are "turkish oil wrestling" and Kushti (indian folk wrestling) so much less known\popular, than sumo, greco-roman, etc? Is it because they themselves imposed heavy non- outsider restrictions upon those sports?
For example in the br*tish empire era, many scholars were fascinated by yoga, but Kushti didn't make much of an impact...likewise the balkans, once ottoman clay, don't have the folk style of turkey.

/jsa/ Japanese sword arts general the importance of defeat edition
A thread to discuss Japanese weapon based martial arts and our own martial journey with like minded people, discussion of other Asian systems is welcomed too.

>what is kendo?
Kendo is a modern Japanese budō that uses shinai (bamboo sword) and armor for combat, in its modern purpose is a way to strengthen body and spirit and develop character.

>is kendo a martial art?
Kinda

>what do I need to start kendo?
A shirt and sweat pants your club will likely borrow you the rest when you start

>what is iaido?
Is a Japanese martial art, influenced by zen practices based on different kata (drills) and subdivided in different schools with solo drills based on drawing the sword from the scabbard to defend from an imaginary opponent.

>what is kenjutsu?
Is a old form of Japanese budō based on the use of various weapons as they were used back in the day by the samurai, depending on ryūha you can have various way of teaching, weapons, presence or lack of sparring and time/place of origin.

>what do I need to start kenjutsu/iaido?
Sweat pants and a shirt again, depending on club ryūha you may be required to buy additional equipment but at the very start you don’t need anything.
