She was corrupted and transformed by the Black Shards, which seem to be crystalized pure darkness, similarly to how the Shadow Crystals are crystalized Determination. It's hard to say what that means, but it seems bad.
She's not some mindless monster though, or even maliciously evil. She's playing her part in The Prophecy like everyone else, and it seems very likely that whatever she and Kris are doing on Carol's orders is meant to bring her back to normal.

When Ramb talks about "you and that girl" and "kids like you two" it sounds like this was something that Kris and Dess specifically shared.
Dess and Asriel were obvious close in their own way, I'm not in any way implying any "Dess the molester lol" shitposting, but Dess also has some clear common points with Kris. They both seem like they were weird kids who would rebel and act out, in contrast to their well-behaved and traditionally successful sibling. Dess would put on MTV, Kris knows the code to watch it and "doesn't need instructions to rock."

Dess and Asriel were taught by Gerson in the old classroom, that's true. We know they brought stuff home from there, with Kris cheating with the cards and Asriel having a drawing of Seam on his computer (there's even speculation that Seam might be Dess's doll, based on her having buttons and yarn in her room).
The library is more of an outlier, it's a completely public space that shouldn't have much real significance to anyone. Unless you were the kind of kid who would take a laptop home to play make-believe (hey, this might explain why Spamton knows something about The Knight and connects to the "unused" code talking about Dess).
The Knight didn't create the TV World, but if you interpret their appearance after slashing Tenna as them crying, that makes a lot more sense if they just killed their imaginary friend.
The Church is similarly a public space, and I doubt Dess was particularly religious, but The Knight's fountain was able to bring Gerson back to life, which Ralsei implies is only possible if the person who created the Dark World has a profound connection to the deceased (though this doesn't have anything to do with Kris, just more "Dess is The Knight" for anyone still in denial about that).
