Sequels for Disney films are almost always cash grabs. The MCU and Star Wars were the first time Disney ever gave a shit about creating multi film narratives, but at least with the former you can hire whoever you want to shit out a film about a hero no one cares about. Say what you will about the prequels, but they so greatly expanded the universe of Star Wars that without them the IP wouldn't be the massive media giant that is today. The setting invites people to want to explore the lore and the people who are in it. However, what Disney saw is a run of the mill sci-fi plot of a hero fighting against an evil emperor and she could only win by unlocking her "full potential". It's something an AI could generate in less than a minute. They made a Disney movie, not a Star Wars movie, and that was the problem. They planned it like they would for a film like Frozen or Big Hero 6. The execs only realized their fuck up after the sequels finished due how universally reviled the movies were by Star Wars fans, and decided to milk the nostalgia cow with series like Andor, Obi Won, and Mandolorian.
