The popular ones with the 'pure' experience are managed by a man or a team of men to maintain the character and are trained and reprimanded to be molded into a specific form. In a way it's not terribly different from creating a video game or anime character, you have to write their personality and stuff.
It seems to pay off as the 'managed' ones make a lot of money.
