Same thing but since the tenon is loose they could reverse it so the wedges are on the inward facing side of the beam...out of the weather and a cleaner look.

They were likely used to secure all the beam sections together and allowed them to be adjusted with a hammer tap here and there so...

Cardboard waterproofing Archived
I've been engrossed by NHIL's video on cardboard construction. I love the concept of builders making stuff out of light, sturdy and free materials, even the glue is just water and flour. The papercrete specifically caught my eye.

But waterproofing is the big issue. Just painting the structure seems to not work, and NH proposes two solutions: a mixture of shellac and beeswax emulsified in boiling ethanol (house full of fire), or gluesticks and parafin wax heated and spread onto the material. The former has the benefit of being applied at room temp like a wood sealant. The later is much simpler to produce and can be re-applied and patched, but only when heated.

Does anyone else know of something to waterproof this material? I feel like hair-spray or some other substance would be an obvious pick.

Ceiling Fan With Remote Archived
Trying to find a ceiling fan with two switches and a remote where you only need one switch or the remote to turn it on. With most, you'd need to turn a switch, then locate the remote and use it. The only way I can think of to do this without having to run another wire is to have a ceiling fan that always has power running to it but is only turned on by a remote, then have three remotes with two mounted to the wall where the switches were. Is there a name for this?
I also thought of a solution where the two switches are replaced with powered push button switches but the power bypasses them into the ceiling fan. The switches use wireless like the remote to turn on the fan.

Bro just get a bunch of remotes. Mount some on the wall and walk around with the other. Adding three ways with remotes just make shit complicated. And smart switches can work but they're really expensive and you have to make sure everything is compatible.
>>2939416 (OP)
These are commonplace among the cheap shit diy grade shops here since you don't need to wire an extra switch for the fan. The remote becomes an annoying extra step rather than anything useful, especially annoying if you have more than one in a space.

Foundry lining Archived
Hello /DIY/, I'm looking to build a higher capacity foundry as my current one is too small for the projects I'm planning, it's going to be powered by a dual fuel Propane/drip oil burner that I'm going to build once the foundry is ready.

the vessel I plan on using is an old 30 gallon water well tank like picrel (mine is an old one that has steel legs) roughly 24 inches wide and 36 tall, I'm going to weld flat plates in the top and bottom domes so the actual inside dimension will be around 24x24.

the hottest I plan on going is around 2300F to melt copper.

My question is what is the most durable lining readily available? it seems that most castable refractory linings are great insulating wise but aren't very durable and need to be relined often, not to mention them costing a shitload of money, I was thinking maybe fire and or refractory bricks as they seem to be very durable, but I have no clue where to source enough of them to line the vessel for a reasonable price.

any input would help, I'm not afraid to spend maybe a couple hundred bucks to build this thing but I'm not going to spend a shitload of money on it.

sealing up masonry and brick water tight Archived
My neighbor and I share a brick wall that acts as a wall to her bedroom, and a wall to my garden. Recently, she found a leak under her floor that is presumably coming from my plant watering as the sprinkler sprays a part of the wall. I'd like to seal up the wall with something durable and lasting. I have researched two products:

Killz masonry stucko and brick paint

BEHR PREMIUM® ELASTOMERIC MASONRY, STUCCO & BRICK PAINT

The BEHR product says it allows breathability to keep moisture from collecting inside of brick. I imagine this isn't a good idea since this seems to be what is causing a collection of water seeping through to the other side.

The alternative is that I use a product I found called castagra, which allows me to paint a surface with basically liquid plastic. But it will not look pleasing and it is extremely hard to apply.

If either of these paints prevent water from getting to the opposite side of the wall, won't it collect water moisture and pull away from the surface in a very short time?

What do you recommend in this situation? Both of these products are water based, so wouldn't that be a problem when I water/when it rains?

Home built in 1985
Dryer vented straight down through floor to crawlspace
Crawlspace had open ventilation up into garage
Garage became magnet for mice who can easily get in the crawlspace and my walls through the garage
Sealed crawlspace now need to vent the dryer somewhere
Shortest route is right though the wall into the garage
Been doing it for a few years now, figured out how to make moisture and heat less with a lint catch and bucket. But I only have one window in the garage and it's on the other side from the vent.

Does it make sense to put in dryer pipes up wall and along ceiling to vent to the window across the room? That way no hot air is pumped into the garage at all? I think that's the easy solution instead of drilling through exterior wall or attempting to vent through crawlspace to pipe outside.

Brass Coating Metal Archived
Hey /diy/, I was looking into electroplating for a retarded autistic project I want to undertake, and my research so far is showing that doing actual brass electroplating would be sorta untenable for me, but then I ran into this sort of brass coating thing.

Basically you heat the steel up fairly high (I think about 1,100 F, 600ish C) and then use a brass wire brush to on the steel, gradually layering on more and more brass as you go.

Has anyone ever tried this? How well did it work for you? Do you think it would work well on small items like pocket watches or small features like engraving very well?

Fountain out of planter Archived
I think I posted about this a few years back. I created a fountain that spills into my wife’s pond. I used a “lightweight” concrete planter ( fiberglass and concrete ) that I got for cheap. I crafted a spillway out of copper. It worked really well - it dropped the temperature of the water in summer, and the plants helped filter the water.

However the reeds we put in expanded like crazy, and roots plus water pressure ended up cracking it open. This is the first pic on top.

Next two pics are the new one I’m working on. This time I cut a spillway off of a scrap fountain. Supporting insides with plexiglass, fiberglass and epoxy.

What I could use some help with is the cosmetics. I’m ok with some cracks - I filled them with epoxy, and I’m ok with a “weathered look”, but I have one area that is more a hole. I would like to match the color and texture of the existing concrete. If I just smear concrete over areas, will it create a similar gray? I feel like it won’t. Too thin a layer and it’ll just peel or crack off.

Or maybe I can create a hole in an area, and basically pack it if with concrete from the back.

Open to any ideas!
