Alternator is dying Archived
When I first start my truck the volt reader only reads about 10 volts and the battery warning light is on
But then I hammer the throttle and it goes to the proper 14-15 volts and remains proper for the whole drive

I am curious to know how long it will last until it totally dies out and doesnt charge it enough to run properly
So far its been doing this for 1 week and today it seemed a little worse (i had to hammer the throttle a lottle longer to get it to engage and charge properly)
So tell me about how long you ran a finicky alternator for!! The battery is 9 years old too! So i will probabaly change that too when i do the alternator!

I should of been more clear that the "revving it up" engages the voltage regulator and then once engaged. It runs 14 volts the rest of the drive , and even at idle
But it finnally did die after a 8 days of doing 50-100 miles daily.

Why, seriously, do we put up with ineptitude at this scale? These things perish within 5 years MAX and literally no-one seems to replace them proactively as required. They fail without warning and leak into everything below, in literally the rainiest, wettest, clungiest, dampest country with the biggest mould problem on the globe as a direct result of insufficient weatherproofing. It's MADNESS how they still contruct flat roofs over something pitched. It's just laziness. I got a cut on my finger. Deep, clean and bleeds a ton but no real damage. Now the problem is I need to grab stuff, and I don't wanna bleed all over stuff when the cut reopens. Bandaid won't help, bandage won't stop bleeding from there - it will have to be so thick as to to make grabbing awkward, and so I was thinking about letting it heal for a day and then putting superglue on top of it so I can work. Use bandages that keep the wound closed.
But if you move too much, or apply too much pressure on your finger, it will reopen no matter what else you're doing to prevent it.
Started using "New Skin" the last couple years. If I had a cut covered by band-aid and was wearing gloves the band-aid would quickly get damp, rub/slide away.

I need help wiring up a bathroom vent fan/light/heater Archived
The picture is the wiring diagram from the unit I want to install.

The box in the wall has a hot black wire and a white wire coming in together, and then there are two pairs, each consisting of a black wire and a white wire together going up to the ceiling. I have figured out which wires in the box correspond to which wires in the ceiling. One pair of wires from box to ceiling is 12 gauge, and the other is 14. The circuit is 20 amps, solely dedicated to this box. The fan/heat switch is a two-rocker 20 amp switch; I think I should use the 12 gauge wire on that switch.

I have the circuit turned off, and the hot wire is not live. I have basic tools and some extra 12 gauge wire and some Wago clamp connectors and wire caps. What I don't have is any idea of what I should actually do now- in the box or connecting the ceiling wires to the unit itself. I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do is even possible. Any help is appreciated. More pics to come.

And there used to be an old fan/light/heater up there, but it had a rotary knob control where you could turn on the fan/light/heater individually or in combos of two, but I don't think you could do all three at once.

Im replacing a double hung window in my house.

I have wood siding and dont want to rip several different boards off to do new install with nailing flange so was gonna go replacement route with no flange but still replace the existing frame.

Was curious as to how water resistant this method is if flashing is done right and also how good it is insulation wise if foam and caulk are used?

Also any recommended windows? Was gonna do vinyl to replace a wood/vinyl clad peach tree since it is cheaper and obviously pella is the standard/most shilled brand but didnt know if their 150 series was decent or if there is a better option

Recumbent bikes Archived
Dia dhaoibh,

I've taken an interest recently to recumbent bicycles and velomobiles/streamliners and have some thoughts I'd like to share and would like to get some opinions maybe. My idea for a very low maintenance recumbent would involve a direct drive 7-13 speed IGH on the front wheel, which would remove the use of a chain altogether, as well as back wheel steering. It would look very similar to the chopzone marauder lowracer: https://chopzone.com/content/plans/marauder_lowracer/marauder_lowracer.htm

I currently only see 2 issues with this:
1. No such internal gear hub exists as of yet according to my research, meaning I'll have to make it myself.
2. This would be a very low bike, which could cause safety issues if used on roads with cars.

I don't think back wheel steering is a huge deal and imagine one would get used to it very quickly, so I didn't include it as an issue.

It's also very likely that this sort of bike would have an electric back wheel which would also make it both wheel drive in a way.

A fairing of any sort could be added to this in theory but I would like to keep it cheap and am holding onto the idea of using some sort of tent pole/windproof fabric as a fairing instead of fiberglass.

Finally this is all to say the overall price of production for this bike would probably sit cheaper than a standard upright derailleur bike, at least I would imagine.

Any notions? Go raibh céad míle maith agaibh.

I got some cash to spend on woodworking tool, specifically planes, but I can't afford everything I want all at once so I'm trying to prioritize.
I currently have a block plane and a shoulder plane, as well as a cordless power plane. What to pick up next?
a) Jack
b) Shooting plane. I know I want one of these and will buy one eventually, but it is rather dedicated-purpose.
c) Smoother. I plan on purchasing both a bevel-up (which I intend to keep a toothed blade in eventually), and a #4-1/2.
I can afford two of these right now. The Jack plane is the typical recommendation since it's so flexible, but I wonder if I really need the flexibility? The fact that it's good for shooting is not important if I will be eventually buying a proper shooting plane. It can be used to bring stock down to size, but my power plane already does that. I'm wondering if it makes sense to skip the jack entirely and pick up one smoother and the shooter?

/diy/ PSA check your toilet tank bolts.

bought my house a few years ago. 1993 house has 3 bathrooms (ask the previous owners). I noticed (when we got the house) that inside the toilet tanks the bolts were rusty. I've been meaning to look in to it, and recently one of the flapper valves broke, so I decided it was time to rebuild all 3 of them.

The first one when I went to remove the bolts, one snapped off when I barely turned it, the others head had about the same amount of material left as a dime.

2nd toilet had been replaced in 2015, and the bolts weren't too bad so I just replaced the bolts.

3rd one (pic related) the bolts were being held on by thoughts and prayers. left is how they came off, and right is what was under the rust.

replace your bolts with stainless steel ones anon before you have a flood.

I just pulled up my toilet and the whole flange is rusted and deteriorating. You cursed me OP.
the reason those bolts are breaking is because you are sposed to undo the nuts on the bottom of them then pull the tank up and off.

i work at a hotel built in 1977. I fix a lot of toilet issues. youd be surprised how old and barely attached a tank can be and not leak.

How would you patch this basement window?
I got a new electrical service and IT conduits to my garage and we had to remove the old basement window to get them through. I would like to put glass block in there, but I'm not sure if the dimensions would work out. I'm also not sure how to make it work around the conduit. I'm going to add a 3/4" water line soon as high as it can go like the others.

I'm thinking about ripping out all the old wooden frame, and putting glass block down low as high as I can go until I hit the conduit, and then using painted plywood on the outside like the piece I have in there now but with foam board sandwiched on the inside. Does anyone know of a better way to seal this thing up? Ideally I would be able to add more penetrations in the future but I think I'm pretty set here so it should be fine.

Guttering - High point in the middle Archived
I found this image on reddit which has almost the exact same circumstances as me, but I can't find much info on this online (or what it's called if this is even a thing)

Long story short, a property I've bought has some poor drainage, in large part due to the guttering being poorly maintained, shitty pipes, etc.

It has a long run on a roof of around 20m (50~ft) with two down pipes at either end, but because the guttering is all fucked it up only goes down one of them. I intend to just take out the existing guttering and putting my own in, but I do want to utilize both down pipes on either end to move as much water away from the property as possible. Is having the high point in the middle like image attached something that can/should be done?

First off no house is perfectly level. After years of guttering not only did I have an eye for it you start noticing certain styles of houses usually have the same problem. You can put your level on the bottom of the fascia board to see which way she drains. Why waist your time ? Short of jacking up...
In the UK rise / fall gutter brackets are popular.
Seems like a good solution since they can always be adjusted if the house settles unevenly, and if you jack up the house later you can adjust gutters again to suit.
