The idea that the reapers destroy organic life in order to preserve it is so insanely... I don't know if I'd call it mundane, but it's just odd how that's what they managed to come up with at the end of the day. Literally anything would've been better. The one potential facet of the reapers I like is when the star child asks "when a fire burns, is it at war? is it at conflict? or is it simply doing what it was meant to do?" I can get down with the idea of them just being a force of nature, not discerning what whether they're doing is right or wrong. The problem is that it was established prior that they seemingly have motives beyond organic understanding, as put forward by sovereign. Obviously the explanation we're given for their being in Me3 is completely within understanding which is why it fucks everything up.

If they didn't want to give us a concrete motive, ideally what they should've done is drip fed us enough info that only alludes to why they exist and what they intend to do. You can have us defeat them, but they could've drafted a narrative that would keep us talking about the mystery of their intentions for years after the franchise has ended... we talk about the reapers a lot still, but not in a good way of course.
