I think Racoon City in Resident Evil is the most plausible, surprisingly. Interesting question. I think they would have a lot of problems doing this, not because of humans, but with other pokemon. They would think the would-be trainer is a weirdo for wanting to do the fighting for them instead of just fighting themselves. All Pokemon have an innate need to fight, but they ALWAYS hold back while working with a human trainer. When "wild' pokemon go at it, it's usually to the death and they go all out. So the trainer-pokemon would have to convince them that this isn't really weird or force them to comply, which could get very violent and possibly result in them killing or being killed. They would not get the "natural" trainer connection I would guess.

Possible though? Yeah. Mewtwo did it by using proxies to set up a tournament and having loyal cloned pokemon.

But how will this build the show? It could've been funny if there was more, maybe a challenge and the losers had to bet hours they would spend doing the punishment. Then when the bottom three lose the challenge they those losers each had to pick another contestant to parody for the hours they bet, but the twist was that for whatever contestant they picked there was a costume to parody that person:

To add. The only characters that would really benefit from a pre Z series are Yamcha, Tien, and maybe Chichi. Every other relevant character in late DB (Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chichi, Launch kind of, Kami, and Piccolo) remains relevant up until Namek/Androids. Tenshinhan and Yamcha were dropped for a reason, they were just boring compared to the newcomers like Piccolo, Gohan, and Bejita. So unless you really like those two there is no reason to request this concept.
