It makes way more sense for FRIEND to be the one that fucked up Spamton and Jevil.

The idea that Gaster fucked with these specific Darkners always felt so weird. Too hands on.
And in Chapter 4, we find out that King never met the Knight, he just was totally loyal to the idea of it from Jevil's stories about how great The Knight is.
I REALLY don't think Gaster would gas up The Knight that much. But I could see something like FRIEND doing that, especially if it's specifically tied to The Knight/Dess.

Mike had its payload blown with the fight in chapter four. That same Chapter we still see it doing it's same dickery in the dark keeping tabs on you. Sure maybe he won't be the thing thats behind it all or led Dess and Kris into the dark originally but it will be a serious problem in some fashion down the line

The other paths are clearly being influenced by other things, Gaster is just too above it all to care.

Gaster is definitely the glowing white text saying it's waiting for it's Deltarune.
Thing is, he says that no matter which path you're on: Weird or Normal. He seems content with the idea that no matter what we'll get to what he wants. He's content with sitting back and WAITING. We'll see him at the end of the road no matter what.

Which is why I think actually the secret boss stuff isn't his doing. He doesn't care if we do it or not. But what if instead one of his servants is the one that set all that up? And they're making us far stronger and pushing for FREEDOM so we'll find a way to free everyone from Gaster's fun little story.
But whether or not that's a good thing is yet to be seen. Maybe the servant isn't free for a reason.

I think the "humble service" lines are indeed tied to FRIEND. And I think it is some kind of extremely powerful being/tool that was used by Gaster to make the world of Deltarune.
And as such it makes perfect sense that it would be using Dess/The Knight to sow seeds of this "FREEDOM" plan. It can only serve others, it can't be free itself. But if (YOU) go out of your way to pursue Freedom and get it, then FRIEND can ride the coattails and finally be free itself.

But like Mike said, it's not really your FRIEND. It doesn't belong to you. Once it's free, who knows what it'll do.
