I rarely do street these days, because it's always "the same".
Take the "street photography is inherently non-artistic" pill and do documentary portraits and landscapes only.

You're not a real photographer unless you shoot people.

Portraiture is the purest and most artistic form of photography bar none. Through portraiture you develop and exhibit the bare minimum of skill needed to engage artistically with other genres and employ some directorial talent to truly create the images you want, not just the ones you stumble into. If you never engage in portraiture you will never, ever develop anything resembling talent. The portrait is the fundamental skill, the pure photography. It is the deceptively simple dish that must be made perfectly, the one that amateurs fail at despite being decent at more complex meals, that you must master if you are ever to truly master anything else.

This fact is not up for debate. Even Ansel Adams did decent portraiture.

This would look good without the frame because it's a good photo.
My theory about why framing makes it look "better": the frame gives the illusion that what we're looking at is a print. Which implies that the photo was good enough to bother printing.

Noob here. Do you use edit or use different settings for sunny or overcast days?
My camera has three C settings on the PASM wheel that I plan to use like C1 - sunny, C2 - overcast, C3 - monochrome. I do very little post-processing and plan to keep it that way.
So should I bump the contrast on overcast days? Or change the histogram?

With baked in we mean as part of the raw data itself, not a flag for a setting that a raw processor uses
A big point of shooting RAW is to change stuff like WB because it explicitly isn't baked in
>>4458995
Most do, and most also inherit which color profiles you use too
>>4458990
I think my camera stores WB value in the raw, so that raw editors can pick it up as a default. I assumed all cameras would do this.
>>4458945
I tend to use mono when it gets dark and crank the ISO. I do love sunshine colour though.

I plan to increase contrast and saturation for my overcast setting and leave it always on AWB.
>>4458979
Maybe baked in isnt the right term considering you can freely change it while in RAW format after the fact.
Perhaps just saying the WB influences the RAW file output is better.
>>4458928
What cameras are you using that WB gets baked in?

Am I retard if I buy the Sony FX3 for shooting video for my music projects? I bought my Canon R8, but I bought it with the intention of shooting photos and now I'm more interested in shooting a music video for my next project. It seems the Canon R8 works but the Sony would be great in low light situations. I'm a one man band so I need as much as convenience as I can get when it comes to features.

I'm not a videographer by any means but to get the level of video I want will likely cost me around $4k for a single video if I hire someone and I figure I can just power through (obviously I won't reach professional level for years but I've found that being in control of the the ideas and editing I can get decent results as opposed to having to deal with some time boxed project with a hired person who won't meet my autistic vision in the end anyways, nothing worse than hiring someone and realizing that its going to fall short of your creative vision midway through).

So with all that said, is the Sony FX3 a killer camera thats plug and play that will offer awesome quality if we assume I have good creative ideas and source material? ($4k is not a massive deal to me if its worth it, but if the quality and convenience is only going to be marginally better than I can easily achieve in the R8 then maybe its a bad fit). Lastly, I will be hiring a colorist in the end so just need something that will get me good footage. I will be doing non coloring editing myself.

Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.

Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap

Programs and resources Archived
Looking for resources on photo editing software and good, clear tutorials of how to use it. I imagine there are plenty of free software that mimic whatever Adobe has, but I know nothing about it.

There is a certain kind of highly stylized photography I want to get into. No pro camera at the moment; I figured that I can get some raw material to work with using a phone and learn how to use the programs first. I imagine that the functions and values are all the same between different platforms and its just the ergonomics and layouts that are different.

I'm coming at this completely from scratch and know almost nothing about photography. Every resource i find assumes I have some basics already and it seems like a tough hurdle to get into. I want to learn more before dropping cash on a camera, so till then, i'll focus on the editing side.

>Happen to be in front of a fantastic scenery or a significant occasion which will be gone within a few seconds.

What do you do? do both at the same time? can you? i can't do it both really. maybe because my head is not sharp and hands are slow.

There is no option C: take the picture and enjoy it in your man cave. the taste is not the same.

This is a question about what one can do in a decisive moment to live best life.

in lens image stabilisation, quick flashing stage light programming and static performer help a lot

If you wanted to do this in the real-world, she would flash you or you would flash her 3 times while your shutter was open and moving.
The blurry bits come from movement.
The "sharp" "burned in images" inside the blur are from separate flash triggers.

I've using the the same lab for the past 4 rolls and for some reason, the skins of the people that I shot came out looking so "reddish". While I understand that we're brown but we don't look this red irl.

top left - Kodak Ultramax 400
bottom left - Fuji 200
top right - Fuji Color 200 (different lab)
bottom right - Vision3 250D
all of 3 use Noritsu HS-1800

so the question is, what's the "problem here?
is it because of the film stocks?
is it the machine?
is it the present the machine use? (idk how the process actually works)
is it the chemical?
and what should I do from now on? change the lab and the machine? or should I ask them to scan the negative back to me as well so I can add the colors myself (I have no idea how lightroom works but I assume I can download presets for each filmstocks to add the colors right?)

Nikon's Capture NX-D version 1.6.4 Archived
Does anyone have this in their archive? Nikon's move to give its customers the dry shove and forcibly remove all installs of previous software from the entire internet (even archive.org) left us all relying on whatever we had already downloaded, but I just went to copy it off my horrendous spinny drive, watched it hang, and in a moment of ass-brain superposition, connected my backup to pull it from, which then immediately hung too. You know the rest, refused to unmount for 6 hrs, hard shut down, came back up & all drives lost their TOC's & recovery is fragment soup. Oh Apple, how I love to hate you sometimes.

If anyone has Capture NXD 1.6.4 to upload somewhere, you have a rare artifact that everyone with a rare 17" MBP needs to make use of our sexy classic computors, and I will offer all the gross sloppy disgusting oral sex you can bear to stomach, or very a sincere thank you, your choice.

It works perfectly but it takes forever, so I want to shoot a color test chart, do the whole process and then build a LUT or profile from the color chart that skips all of the intermediate steps so it can be done in one click in lightroom or whatever program. How can this be done?

Dehancer lightroom plugin is pretty good. Easy to pirate as well, just have to look around a bit. I like it since I don't have to alter my workflow much, import to lightroom after cull and just 'edit in > dehancer' the ones I want to fuck with

I may post the results later, but if you want to take a look at the program, it’s called agx_emulsion on GitHub. It’s a bit wonky to install and it takes like 90 seconds to compute a full resolution image. It’s neat but it takes a ludicrous amount of time, the parameters are confusing and...
