Not deaf but my parents are and I've been involved with deaf community events since I was a toddler. Can attest that some deaf people take it too far into "crabs in a bucket" territory. I've seen a dude slap his wife in public for bringing up the idea of getting cochlear surgery.
Most deaf people aren't like this though and simply want to be treated as equal. which is why they'll sign at you when talking to a hearing person, even if said person obviously doesnt know ASL
