The elephant in the room /vr/
Sonic the Hedgehog, once a mysterious legend in the gaming world, has devolved into a laughing stock. The fandom, once passionate and dedicated, has become a caricature of itself. The obsession with shipping and memes has overshadowed the series' original charm and innovation.
The original games were masterclasses in platforming and just... SOUL. Sonic's mysterious aura and surreal sceneries captivated audiences, making him a cultural icon. However, as the series progressed, the focus shifted from gameplay to gank culture and fan service.
The fandom's toxic behavior, entitlement, and obsession with shipping have driven away new fans and tarnished the franchise's reputation. The constant bickering, pedantry, and infighting have made Sonic a joke, a symbol of cringe and desperation.
The series' creators, once visionaries, are now held hostage by a fandom that prioritizes petty squabbles over innovation. Sonic's legacy is a shadow of its former self, a cautionary tale of how a beloved franchise can be ruined by its own fans.
I want to reclaim Sonic's legacy, the original games, the passion, and the creativity that made Sonic a legend, leave the toxicity and obsession behind and rediscover the magic that once was.

Why did they even make these games 3 buttons if there's never really any reason to not fire your weapon and missiles at the same time
Same with Darius but that's 2 buttons when it could've been one button
Would've saved money for Gradius especially considering most cabinets at the time were 2 buttons, but they really couldn't imagine not having the missile on a separate button?

Zoomer Experiment /vr/
So among my generation, I've noticed there is a severe lack of understanding of the differences between 8-bit and 16-bit. Most zoomers really cannot tell accurately what it is and its even worse when they try to describe something like Atari's 8-bit graphics.

Anyways I have started doing this experiment and would be funny if you share results of trying it too.
Take two 16-bit games, I do one for Genesis and one for SNES. Then ask them which do they think is 8-bit and which 16-bit and almost everyone (except one guy who already plays games of all eras) said the Genesis ones are 8-bit and the SNES ones are 16-bit.

Titanic Mystery: Ao no Senritsu (NES) english translation /vr/
>Titanic Mystery: Ao no Senritsu" is an action-adventure game on the Famicom Disk System. In this game, you're a CEO of a company in charge of raising the RMS Titanic from its resting place. Select one of three divers (whichever you choose has no effect on the game) and dive into the Titanic wreckage to pull out artifacts which you can sell to investors while, at the same time, find a way to raise the doomed ship from its oceanic grave.

I played through Diver's Dream on the PSX last year, this reminds me a lot of that

>The translation patch comes with a fan-translated instruction manual, which also contains a small manga backstory. (Warning, the manga has a brief nude shower scene.)

Were ID Software really huge fanboys for Nintendo?

Carmack's original big tech breakthrough was used to do reproduce SMB3 on computers, Romero asked Kemco to make the GBC version of Daikatana like Zelda, and Tom Hall's Anachronox was mirrored after Japanese design sensibilities, not western. And I recall Romero's favorite game is Chrono Trigger.

Shmups /vr/
You should play shmups.
Don't worry about finding one that's "easy" or "for beginners"; they're all hard, just pick what you think is the coolest or best one. The only difference is time, and the really good ones have enough depth to not get tiresome. You just have to change your mindset, credit-feeding is acceptable for practice but it's not beating the game. Chase the 1cc. Easily the most gratifying experience in gaming.

Also "memoslop" isn't real, it's a meme non-players made up to describe routing

With homebrews, there is now likely over 1000 games in the Mega Drive library, and it's growing everyday, now with major releases from mainstream studios. The Mega Drive is essentially revived and a "current console" of sorts.
Yet we don't see anything even close to this on SNES, despite it being "more popular". Why is that?

Any Breath of Fire fans out there?
I ignored this franchise as a kid, but just played through the first 4 games over the past year
It was interesting to see how the games evolved from 1994 to 2000; a snapshot of what RPGs were like at that point in gaming history
It was always great to see Deis appear in some form or another
I enjoyed BOF4 the most, by far
I know that BOF5 was made by a completely different team, but played the first few minutes of BOF5 and actually thought it seemed interesting, so I might continue playing it
Any thoughts to share on the franchise? Memes? Waifu debates?

Castlevania 64 /vr/
After playing through Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness back to back, I can safely say they're genuinely great games and a good translation of the series to 3D whose reputation got ruined by retarded ecelebs that suck at video games. Bonus points for having actual vampires to fuck up and even some spoopy moments. As rough as C64 it is, I still believe it should be played first for the full experience, if only because experiencing a classicvania without a whip-wielding chad first is just wrong, and mostly because Cornell is a bit too overpowered for most of the game. The camera and controls in the original aren't that bad either, any problems stem mostly from the automatic camera being forced into awkward angles and some ridiculously precise jumps, which thankfully were fixed in LoD.

Why do people still complain about retro games being cryptic and obtuse? I understand that they were bullshit back in the day but now that the internet exist it's easy to look up the solution to anything that you are stuck on, so it's more or less a non-issue these days.

What were the retro games you were most excited to play back in the day?

I remember being incredibly hyped when Dragonball Budokai was announced, cause I loved watching it on Toonami. I saw ads for it in gaming magazines as early as 2001, a whole year before it came out. As a very little kid at the time (I think I was seven or eight) it was really hard having to wait that long to play the game.

Why did Iga get so butthurt at this game, to the point where he retconned it? It's a near perfect mix of oldschool Castlevania combat and Metroid item progression.
