Kaiserredux is a real mixed bag. A big problem I have with it is structure. Take Al Capone for example. His successors clearly have a lot of love and care put into them. But they're basically just different coats of paint with no meaningful differences between them gameplay wise. Capone dies, then you choose the successor, then you click 5 focuses or whatever in order, and they just give national spirits/pp/stab/whatever. I think the best country to play in Kaiserredux is Ukraine, where it takes the overall gameplay and structural skeleton from Kaiserreich Ukraine, but adds new paths, new interesting gameplay options, and the lore/writing isn't made by a Ukrainian nationalist/murderer apologist. Minigames also aren't bad and can be very good. It just depends how they're done. TNO is the bad example because all the normal gameplay is stripped out and the minigames are all that's left. But in Kaiserreich and certain countries in Kaiserredux, the minigames provide interesting things to do before the war and ways to personalise or optimise your country, and have a meaningful impact on your performance in the war. They're in service to the primary focus of hoi4 as a wargame rather than being for their own sake.
