Literally the only time you HAVE to experience FRIEND is him giving a jumpscare to (You) during Ralsei's explanation of Darkners. Every other appearanc eof FRIEND is something on the side or that you have to go look for.
The idea that that thing is going to be the big bad of the main story is just shit writing. A full on out of nowhere character that didn't matter till just then and only makes any sense if you go deep into the side content/lore.

FRIEND probably is very important to the foundation of the story. He may literally be the source of the Dark or something.
But I don't think he's going to be at all front and center in the main plot. He's going to be something you only find out about if you went through with all the side stuff.
