It's common for hotshot climbers to do this, that's how Brad Gobright went and almost took his partner with him. Another common thing is rapping on old/bad tat. Climbing ability had nothing to do with safety consciousness.

Moving to Madison soon, so how would you guys rate Wisconsin? I did quite a bit of fishing there growing up, which was fantastic, but what about everything else? Hiking, homesteading, skiing, etc. I've heard are all pretty good there.

I like the fact this is a largely a white man's pursuit, and I like how everyone say Hi to each other on the trails. I ALSO hate running but turns out walking up mountains is pretty damn fire for your cardio. Skinny white people who eat healthy is what I see on the trails and I love it, pic is from New Zealand.

what strange / spooky stuff have you seen?

once when i was in the desert, there was a telephone pole, on it looked exactly like a 10ft tall bird of prey, just eyeing me down
it was about a good 5min of walking, which felt like forever, just to see that it was a transformer that looked weird, none of the other poles had it either
sounds dumb, but it really did look exactly like a gigantic human sized hawk, and the "head" even seemed to follow you too, really interesting illusion, since it also hit all the primal parts of the brain that gone "you're about to be fucking eaten by a bird!!!!!!"
a year or two later, when i was gonna take a picture, it was gone, which adds a strange air to "it was right there, i tell you!"

/out classic/ thread
In honor of Halloween, and we haven't talked about this guy in like a year, I'd like to get everyone to remember the tragic tale of James Kim, who got cuck-killed by his nagging white wife.

Guy, his wife, and their daughters, age 4 and 7 mo finished Thanksgiving with family in Seattle, and decided to stay at a resort on the Oregon coast on the way back to San Francisco. He was television personality and audio reviewer for CNET. This was in late 2006, so before smartphones. They missed the turn to the main highway connecting interstate 5 with the Oregon coast, pulled into a gas station to ask directions, and fucked it up from there. The wife was nagging him to get home and it got dark and they ended up on logging roads that theoretically DO connect I-5 and the Oregon coast, but it was snowing heavily and they turned around, got lost, and gave up. He went to seek help and died frozen, and the wife and two daughter survived.

The price a man pays for a hypergamous marriage.

In the south, id say 30/50. Otherwise 20/40. Really it comes down to shoulder season and if it's consistently near freezing I'd go lower to account for extra factor like wind and humidity levels, elevation, etc. 0/20/40 is a common range and it generally holds unless your weather is mild.

A newbie in need of recommendations for a cheap tent, preferably under 250 bucks.

I've heard about tents like Lanshan 1, but I'd rather ask first some proper autists before committing to anything.

Wanted to commission a custom-made spear. Any Suggestions?
Obviously idk about the specific measurements for a spear (much less polearms) but what i do know is that for personal use (outside of formations) the total length must be at least close to the height of your doorframe (210cm) but i'm going for the shortest end which is 180cm. The shaft would be 150cm long and the spearhead 30cm, again CMIIW because i'm using the same ratio for straight swords.

The blacksmith recommended me using sleipner steel or D2 for the spearhead, sleipner costs around 191 usd and D2 149 usd, for the shaft he hasn't given me any specifics yet.

For the design, i'm currently going rather simple as starters but suggestions are welcome.

Any advice?

Honestly good for him. I don't ski, and I certainly don't have the skill to attempt something like that. That's a hell of a feat.

Conservation general
why does it seem like all you people want to go out and be “in le nature” but don’t give a single fuck about preserving ecosystems or native biodiversity? You feel entitled to go out and be in nature and treat it like your personal fucking playground, damaging the ecosystem and demanding roads and trails be paved through the wilderness so you can “heckin enjoy it”? And then go home and continue to fuel the 6th mass extinction with your destructive consumerist habits?
Anyway, I planted some Texas native wildflowers today to help the declining pollinator population in my area. What did you do?

flashlight etiquette
this home owner confronted me about my headlamp being too bright and it causing his dog to freak out. my usual walk at night to the park. i just got a nitecore nu20 classic and did have it on the high setting (prob like 300 lumens) cause this part of the street is pitch black. usually use my flashlight pointed at the ground at this part but it was pretty damn cool illuminating the whole area. was I being rude? i told the guy sorry about that. i thought it's pretty fair game as long as i'm not looking at people's houses and stuff

Scaredy Cat General
I love being outdoors, love hunting camping hiking fishing, all of it. Been doing it all since a kid. But I have a huge problem with being scared of the dark. I'm alright as long as there's someone else with me, but when I'm alone out deep enough into the woods I can't help but be debilitatingly scared of the dark.

It's so bad that I have to have my hand on my gun at all times once the sun goes down, I even piss in a bottle at night so I don't have to leave the tent. It's hard to sleep because I'm hyper alert to every sound, and as you know there are a lot of them at night. So my question is, has anyone else felt with this and how did you over come it?

Help me find shoes /out/!
So I have been looking for hiking boots that double as everyday leather boots too. Been looking at the jim green collection. And I am torn between a razorback, a normal AR8 and a tyre wedge AR8.
> The normal AR8 are nice, with a good sole, but they are a bit chunky
> The tyre wedge AR8 are lighter, but I am unsure if the sole is good for hiking
> The razorback is probably the best one for hiking, but it looks perhaps too "outdorsy"
