Read "Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" by Bruce Tremper at least before you think about going out. It's basically the Bible for this stuff. Picrel is from that book and describes the danger of Backcountry skiing pretty concisely.

Gold Panning
Anyone into prospecting/panning/using similar tools to get shiny things while you're /out/? I recently bought a kit and tried it out yesterday, seems like a fun hobby. With the currency at all time lows it might even be lucrative.
Might head up into the White Mountains this weekend and try my luck.

Ultralight hikers are the Cyclists of the Trails.
Ultralight hikers are the biggest joke on the mountain. They roll up bragging like they’re the elite of the outdoors because they shaved 200 grams off their kit at the cost of thousands of dollars, but really, they’re just trust-fund babies playing wilderness cosplay. Every sentence out of their mouth starts with “my base weight is…” as if anyone cares. They obsess over spreadsheets and gram counts like they’re planning a moon landing, but then forget the basics: no first aid kit, no proper knife, not even a damn multi-tool. They’re the ones asking to borrow your lighter, your tape, your stove, basically turning everyone else into their personal gear supplier while pretending they’re hardcore minimalists.

And let’s be real: these people don’t actually hike. They wander just far enough to snap a staged Instagram pic of their titanium spork and their $600 ultralight tarp pitched at a bad angle, then head back to town to sip craft beer and write a self-congratulatory blog post about how they’re “living simply.” They’re allergic to actual dirt, rain, or effort. The only thing ultralight about them is their personality.

The worst part? They’re always the ones Search and Rescue has to haul out because they thought a space blanket, two protein bars, and a selfie stick counted as survival gear. Meanwhile, the people with “heavy” packs are the ones who have to hand over their food, tent pegs, rope etc. Ultralight hikers aren’t minimalist pioneers they’re freeloading disasters waiting to happen, more concerned with clout than competence. Strip away the Instagram filters and the $500 shoes, and you’re left with what they really are: clueless posers cosplaying adventurers, desperate for likes while everyone else carries their dead weight.

I always find it easier as well when I have a purpose and a gun (hunting, tracking, foraging, cutting wood for a fire, etc).
It is nice to acclimatize to the dark; the woods at night are something special. If you can adventure out into the dark at night with reckless abandon you can enjoy some real adventures.

Thread 2847671
I might legit be going crazy but recently in the past few months the sound of machines and engines has only been making me more and more angry and now it's at a point where if I hear some faggot with no muffler rev his engine on the road or if I hear some boomer running his lawn mower or string trimmer or leaf blower I feel a murderous rage. There is no peace or quiet or tranquility in society. I don't know what to do about this, if I'm just vitamin deficient or something, but the sounds of engines and machines specifically piss me off so much I almost can't live in my own house anymore. Anyone else feel this anger at the destruction of tranquility? We always need to be spewing noise and smoke and filth everywhere because otherwise some faggot boomer will get mad that there's a few leaves on the sidewalk. I'm starting to think Edward Abbey was onto something.

Do you also feel like the smallest mountains are also the scariest?
On big mountains you have established trails made in such a way hundreds of people who hike them every day don't die. On small mountains you're usually alone and instead of a trail there are just steep slopes covered with dirt that falls down under each of your steps and to descend you need to use your ass as a sledge and all limbs as brakes.

Thread 2844564
Hi /out/ TLDR: I want to know all about making drinking water.
long story: I am gettin a little into prepping. I don't really like the scene because it's full of faggots thinking they are Rambo and spending loads on equipment. but I also think I should know a little about what to do in an emergency. I can't rely on public services.
in order to get into, I thought about the most probable scenario in my case. that would be urban survival. and I thought that the first and most important thing I should know is how to make drinking water. how to make sure I can get clean water, or clean it myself.
Any advice is welcome. Discussion too, but main point is drinking water.

The active chemical that does most of the work when you add bleach to water is hypochlorous acid (HOCL). It's a strong disinfectant that's also noncytotoxic.

Due to local laws it's not a good idea to carry a locking blade. I've seen examples of slipjoint knives that don't lock but at the same time won't close in on somebody's hand when in use.

Picrel is a Böker Plus Worldwide, the mechanism can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxk-U0zjGvU

How do I get down this?
I can’t get past this point on the trail. It’s like a 3 or 4 meter foot vertical drop with nothing to grab onto but the rope. I tried to do the thing where you put your feet on the wall and go down backwards but they slipped on the rocks and I only managed to keep myself from falling by holding hold onto the rope with pure panic strength, then I turned back.

Is it simply a skill issue or is there a technique to it? I’m also usually the only one on the trail, so I’ve never seen anyone else do it either.

I have yet to encounter a ridge of 3-4m that I could not hike along and find an alternative safe route up/down. Eventually you'll find something with enough footholds or grips. You could go and buy some paracord and wrap it around a sturdy tree if there truly is no way.

Yup piebald. It’s linked to inbreeding. When I was stationed on Ft Meade there was a thick deer population that never got hunted and never left the base so there were a ton of them.

piebald, it's an uncommon set of genetics. Unlike albinos, piebalds are leucistic, meaning they have only partial pigment loss. It show up in many animal species. It's not unhealthy, but piebald and albino deer don't survive as long because they're easier to spot.

Do you think it is a rather not needed item thats need can be superseded by a usual every day knife?
It is easier to just snap logs for a fire than to hack them with a survival knife.
This is of course not including raw survival where you are needing bushcraft and hunting skills to actually survive. Just general non normie tier camp holiday woodland camping.

times you pooped outside
heres mine
time was about 3 weeks ago
was fishing at the river behind my house and had a decent fishing day except for one moment
was drinking with my rican friend who brought some ribs and casting for catfish
i had like about 85 yards out and felt a rumble
so im like ill wait for a hit on the hook and then run back and shit
well about 10 minutes goes by and its grtting worse
like channeling energy to my sphincter
i say fuck that im gonna lose it and start reeeling in my line
now im struggling to hold this flow in reeling in on a 12 foot pole on 40 lb test with a 4oz weight(nriver has some deep black mud), i knew it was gonna be a bad one
god knows 8 seconds into the retreival im probably 40 feet from shore i get a MASSIVE strike
and then it happened
the force of the fish hitting my hook plus my stance, it must have looked absurb.
mind you now, i am wearing swimtrunks (no net) and all this happens in less than a second
i instinctely threw back my rod for the hook land, and in the same action release my bowels
an ABSOLUTE TORRENT of liquid shit blasts out of me
now my brain flashes
FISH OR SHIT
>the brown tide has now crossed my shorts cutoff and is dripping down both my legs
i chance a look down and my god its heinous at the same time my friend just realized what has happened
hes now yelling at me DUDE YOU SHIT YOURSELF! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU
i start charging at the reel, fish still on, 25 feet to go, ill wipe when i land it
bitch breaks off at the shore line

not a good time

Cost-effective stove/hot tent
I want to get into some winter camping (pine woodlands) and the colder it is the quieter it is out there. As such I want to take a stove with me for a cosy time, reading and carving things inside a warm tent. I'm on a basic budget but these are what I'm thinking. I don't care to spend extra on titanium even though it is half the weight, I will just take more rest stops.

Which of these tents would you choose? Or which other? First tent (picrel) only fits1 person, stove inside main compartment - needs a heat mat

XL Hiking footwear. Archived
Hi Anons
Bit of background.
I am a single Dad to a teen son. We have been hiking together and enjoying the outdoors since he was able to walk.
The problem is he has grown A LOT in the past year.
Right now his foot size is 2.5 sizes larger than mine and he is almost as tall as me at only 13 yrs old.

Finding boots that fit his foot size is ok but he has these huge calf muscles that can't fit inside the shaft of the boot. And if we do find something that sort of fits he runs out of lace to tie them up.

It's the same with socks. I tried XXL merino wool socks from Cabelas and while they fit his foot they are digging into his calf muscles and causing pain just trying them on.

He says he wants to just wear ankle socks and running shoes but that is a no go because I'm concerned about him rolling his ankles.
Will I have to go custom? Or can any anons recommend some hiking boot/socks brands for larger people?

Where do you live and what are you up to? Genuinely curious. That setup seems like it’s ready for super low temps

It’s just summer with 100% humidity or summer with 100% humidity and a slight breeze
Time to steal all the neighbors leaves.

Tbh anyone that says "indian summer" is a larper
>>2841598 (OP)
>heatwaves and drought all summer
>suddenly nonstop rain
what the fuck.
I want summer back. There are like 2 days in the whole month with any decent visibility and no rain. Soon there won't be any leaves on the trees. Fuck this shithole earth.

>Making a park less accessible helps. I wish people knew the difference between a national park and national forest/wildland. If you want freedom, to harvest, hunt, or fuck around, go to a national forest. If you want to just hike and enjoy nature, maybe camp, go to a park.

This is why I ...

Tourists will always be retarded. I could rant for hours about the dumb shit I deal with. Even yesterday was fucking shitty with some retarded hippie I had to remove.

Short answer is that there is...
I think the main solution is the jurisdictional fighting over boundaries, whether things are developed within, or outside the park.

The tourism revenue goes mostly to the municipality, through shops, businesses, so amenities immediately outside the parks can be built sensibly to service the park. ...
Big problem in my jurisdiction, classic dilemma of the commons.

Local access vs. Tourist access, local jobs vs tourism revenue, conservation vs development. These parties will always be at war, nobody will accept a middle ground because it's a power struggle.

One jurisdiction just banned tourism...

The game is over, as I am fond of saying Archived
The jews won. They are in control of the Pikes Peak batholith and the multi-trillion-dollar granite tunnel system — a highly symbolic 40 miles west of Denver, Colorado in the Front Range. But they are in control of much more than the end-time survival apparatus. They control not only the military and government of the United States of America but through the power of major corporations and the corruptibility of businessmen and government officials, fiat currency manipulation by the WiΩards of Fiat Currency at the Federal Reserve System, a small army of propagandists and "hackers" (this is a technically incorrect use of the term) who are fighting to maintain control of the Frankenstein monster they created called the Internet (in a war I fear they are going to lose), and even the Republican form of government they created which inevitably—and I would argue by design—fosters centralized control and assures only a handful of "elected" officials must be compromised to control an entire country, they control the entire Western world.

What is the logistical point of permits?
Why do you "need" permits for the JMT and how are they actually enforced?

I'm in a rustbelt state. We're already doing our part. Clean out California, Texas, and New Jersey to get down to 250 million.

I agree. Please kill yourself right now so that I can go camping without reservations in state parks and without seeing other people.

I'm going to need you two to also off yourselves. For environmental conservation and for peace in the outdoors.
The US should target 250 million as a goal stable population. Once we went over that mark, things started to get overcrowded everywhere.
